My story began with what I like to call “Divine Intervention” I was lucky to start my journey into healing arts straight out of high school. I started looking for anything interesting to do in the mean time while figuring out what I truly would enjoy doing with my life. I came across massage therapy, Having always been intrigued by the human being, anatomically and psychologically with an extensive background in ballot and acrobatics, it seemed like the perfect “temporary” fit. Little did I know I would fall in love with the complex and intricate inner workings of, well, us! I developed a great passion for using my hands to aid in the natural healing and restoration of the human body, mind and soul. I graduated from the Nevada School of Massage Therapy at the age of nineteen and immediately began my career in a more clinical setting at a chiropractic office and from there I ventured in to all motions of practice including spas, hotels and chair massage. My favorite has always been the real therapeutic work. Observing real progress and real results through customized sessions. It is so rewarding meeting a person for the first time who is desperate for even a day of relief and then watching the progress from their demeanor and attitude to their posture and physique. A couple of years into the business, I had several personal encounters with opioid overdoses. These instances fueled me into the direction of anti-pharmaceutical pain relief. If there is a way to prevent unnecessary surgeries or prescription usage, I am about it. This does not have to be your way of life. About 18 months after moving to Austin from El Paso. I was urged by a colleague to apply at Oak Haven Massage since I specialized in Deep Tissue Massage. Upon my interview I learned everything this facility had to offer. A daycare with employee discounts had me sold already, Being a single mother of a young boy. Full benefits, Free In-house training and CE accredited. I was hired on and Oak Haven Massage has been my absolute favorite place to work. Our team is a family, the owners are behind us 100 percent and are always looking to improve employee and customer satisfaction. I use the daycare which allows me to work evenings as well as weekends. The real gift however, is in the classes, I have excelled in my profession beyond my own expectations. After taking Deep Tissue brush, Anatomy and my favorite, Clinical mastery classes, I went from being a good therapist to an amazing one in less than two years with still so much to learn! There is no such thing as becoming complacent here. Aside from the knowledge I’ve gained through the classes, my love and passion for massage has grown after mentoring with upper leveled therapists. Oak Haven Massage is the best decision I’ve made thus far. I am on fire to further myself with more techniques to become more universal in customizing your massage and to help you live a better life. No matter where I end up. Oak Haven Massage will always have been a monumental learning experience in my field of work.

When I first arrived at Oak Haven I was looking for a place of higher learning, a community of sharing, and a place where I can test my abilities as a therapist. I found all this and a place that cared about people. Clients, therapists, front staff, house keepers are all treated as important and with compassion. The owners set a high work ethic which is also passed on to management and staff. In my time at Oak Haven I have learned techniques and protocols which have made me more efficient and effective. Tools, like forearms and elbows, that help me apply pressure and maintain my energy all day and all week. The body awareness that helps me move around the table with ease and allows me to go deeper with less effort. How to better communicate with clients which has also helped me with friends and family surrounding my personal life. With so many amazing therapists Oak Haven has created a community that shares, pushes, supports and encourages us to be World Class. I have used our lounge and classroom as a space to share philosophy, dissected failures and successes, and for receiving honest crucial feedback to improve my craft. It was and still is humbling to see and receive work from so many different and skilled therapists. Oak Haven has given me the skills needed to excel, imagine and create the perfect massage for my clients. This encouragement for mastery has translated into my personal life. I have seen my confidence shine through and into others, it has completely changed how I relate in my existence, my environment and to the people around me. My career here at Oak Haven has been a wonderful journey full of growth, setbacks, empowerment, and support. Not many people are fortunate enough to be in a position where they are able to earn a living doing something they love. I happened to stumble my way into a field of work I am most passionate about. The rewards are much more than monetary. I have the privilege of being loved by many as my work has a direct impact on my clients quality of life. Coming to work doesn’t feel like any job I have ever known. The entire Oak Haven staff has the same desire to deliver the best quality possible. When I first started, I did not see massage therapy the way I do now. The more familiar I became with my coworkers and their work, the more I felt my work was substandard. I wondered, “How will I be able to stand out in an arena full of gladiators?” After each massage I would receive, the caliber of LMTs blew me away, and I soon realized that if I wanted to make this work I would need to take this work seriously. I felt that I was in competition and needed to stand out, but I could not have been more wrong. As time went by, I started taking the classes and mentorship, and my work started to improve significantly. I also came to realize how different we all are, and how each of us have something special and unique about our work. I have built a strong network of mentors and am able to refer my clients to many LMTs with confidence. The growth and support I have experienced here has been priceless. I was unaccustomed to being valued as an employee and a coworker; it took me a while to see how everyone here only wants to see one another succeed. I hit the turning point in my career here early on. I was in my first Neck and Shoulder class and I revealed that I suffered from daily headaches for 16 years. At the time, I was taking Rx pain killers and muscle relaxers. Having a headache everyday was something I became used to. I did not even realize the negative impact it was having on my daily interactions with everyone in my life. Would you believe that after experiencing the work during class I went an entire week without a headache? Now there I was working with all these rock stars and I wanted that to be me. I wanted to share this work and all the benefits with as many people as I could. I had no idea the value this work had and getting to experience the impact first hand was a game changer for me. To this day I rarely get a headache, and when I feel one creeping back in I get a massage from one of my many favorite Massage Therapists. Throughout my first few years here, my career slowly gained momentum, and I started to see massage therapy in a new light. I only had to step out of my box and learn to put my ego away in order to become part of a wonderful family of so many talented individuals. My work has evolved over time and I continue to grow and learn each year. I cannot express how much being a part of OHM means to me. It has been an honor to have been given the opportunity to help so many people improve their quality of life. I am so thankful that I am part of an organization that places such a high value on their employees. Being a Massage Therapist is a career that knows no limits on fulfillment, and working here at OHM only makes it better.

As a massage therapist for more than 18 years I can tell you Oak Haven Massage is head and shoulders above the rest. Before Oak Haven I worked in spas, did home visits and had my own chair massage business. In 2007, I interviewed with Dr. Steven Shuel and I decided to join the OHM family. From the beginning Oak Haven Massage has been a special place. Under the leadership of Dr. Shuel, I have seen the business grow from about 20 to nearly 200 employees. Even though the business has grown the family feel remains the same. OHM was the first in the industry to offer advanced training for its therapists. Doc took me in under his wing and became a great mentor. I have worked as the head instructor for many years and have become a nationally certified instructor known around the state. OHM is respected in the industry so much that its competitors see the value of the continuing education programs we offer and have contracted with OHM to provide training to their therapists. Education has been paramount to OHM’s success. Along with the top-notch training for its therapists, the instructors have also been afforded opportunities to do advanced training; such as a human dissection lab and advanced stretching. Participating with the dissection lab catapulted my understanding of the soft tissue and spurred a creativity and thirst for knowledge that brought a new level of understanding to what we were teaching. Along with the educational opportunities, OHM offers its employees medical, dental and vision benefits. Paid time off, company picnics and bonuses are also incentives. I’ve never known another massage business to offer any of those perks. Last year they even sponsored an “Elite Retreat” where the top therapists and a guest were taken on a cruise to the Caribbean.
